Weekly Research Review – 8 to 15 October 2026

This review covers 8 to 15 October 2026 (eight days), as the previous review ended on 7 October. A thin week for hard occupancy data: no new national occupancy or enrolment release landed in the window, so this review focuses on provider failures, regulation and cost pressures.

This Week’s Headline

Edge Early Learning’s collapse reached its endgame this week: Goodstart and others are taking over 53 services, but 11 centres closed on 14 October, some with about 48 hours’ notice.

Key Metrics at a Glance

  • 53 – Edge services with proposed sales
  • 31 – Edge centres Goodstart agreed to acquire
  • 11 – Edge centres closed on 14 October
  • 20 – Jabiru Qld OSHC services moving to Camp Australia
  • $7,280 – Annual NSW fee for a large for-profit 81-100 place service

Closures & Suspensions

Edge Early Learning, which entered voluntary administration in August, is now being broken up. Administrators KordaMentha have secured proposed sales for 53 services across Queensland and South Australia, with Goodstart Early Learning agreeing to acquire 31 and six other operators covering a further 22 through agreements or term sheets. Montessori Academy plans to take nine, six in Queensland and three in South Australia.

The remaining 11 centres could not be sold and closed on 14 October: seven in Queensland, three in South Australia and one in the ACT. Some families reportedly received about 48 hours’ notice. All sales remain subject to final documentation and regulatory approvals.

Separately, Jabiru Community Services will transfer its 20 Queensland outside school hours care services to Camp Australia in three stages in January 2027, subject to regulatory approval. Children are expected to keep their programs, spaces and educators.

Policy & Regulatory Updates

Supervision is back in focus in the ACT, where two five-year-olds reportedly climbed a fence at Majura Early Childhood Centre and were found by members of the public. The provider has apologised and appointed an external investigator, and the regulator is assessing whether further action is needed.

G8 Education announced a national rollout of a child safety and consent curriculum aimed at almost 30,000 children, following the arrest of a former employee. A Department of Education update published on 8 October also noted that Education Ministers agreed in July to explore a potential Early Education and Care Commission.

Workforce & Cost Pressures

ACA NSW has renewed its challenge to NSW regulatory service fees ahead of a 15 November payment deadline. It reports increases of as much as 1,000 per cent, with a large for-profit provider paying $7,280 a year for a service with 81 to 100 places, against about $650 for an equivalent service a year earlier.

New research from the Working for Women Research Partnership found flexible work can improve job quality or deepen insecurity depending on design. The findings are national rather than ECEC-specific, but they raise questions for rostering in a sector with 268,050 workers, 91.2 per cent of them women.

Investment & Property Market

Landlord exposure to Edge is the property story. Arena REIT earlier set a 4.50 cent quarterly distribution against 4.8125 cents in FY2026 and put Edge at about 14 per cent of rental income across 31 properties (context, 7 October). Its guidance assumes no Edge rent from 1 August, yet reporting this week says rent continues across all 27 Arena-owned centres Edge occupies, and that Arena holds about $4 million in security.

What This Means for Independent Centre Operators

Edge’s failure shows how quickly continuity of care can break down, and families affected by the 11 closures are looking for places now. Independent centres near the affected suburbs (Cannon Hill, Kelvin Grove, Milton, Morayfield East, South Brisbane, Strathpine, West End, Oaklands Park, Plympton, Royal Park and Ngunnawal) should check vacancies and publish clear availability, fast tour booking and a priority enquiry path in Google Business Profile and on the website.

Families are also more alert to safety and stability. Make your supervision practices, ratios, staff tenure and ownership visible on your website and in tours, and respond to every enquiry the same day. Reassurance converts when parents are anxious.
